Eighth edition of the Day of Online Surveys (DSA19) at the FDV

The eighth Day of Online Surveys (DSA) took place at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Social Sciences, on 25 September 2019, 9.00-12.30.

The event is organised by the Centre for Social Informatics (CDI) and is aimed at a wider professional audience of online survey users and users of the 1KA online survey tool.

The programme started with a brief overview of trends in online surveys and the development of the 1KA tool. Most surveys today are conducted via mobile phones, so the "mobile first" rule should be followed when designing surveys, notes Prof. Vasja Vehovar. The vast majority of the dilemmas of mobile question display are solved in this framework, he adds. He points to the problem of non-cooperation of respondents, which is still growing. He says that more and more innovative, but also more expensive methods are needed, which are also effective for longer surveys. In the first year since the introduction of the GDPR, he notes that it has not had a major impact on the survey process itself. 1KA nevertheless has one of the most advanced supports for GDPR surveys (more).

Next, we hosted the foremost expert on online surveys, Dr Mick Couper (University of Michigan, USA), who presented the challenges of mobile surveys and answered questions. He highlighted the problem of coverage, as smartphones do not solve this problem, and the digital divide is still present. He also noted that both response and drop-out rates are lower on smartphones than on computers. Research shows that the time taken to complete the survey is also longer on smartphones. However, he points out, many of the problems of mobile web surveys can be reduced by proper questionnaire design and development.

In the second part, parallel seminars for different segments of 1KA users were held.In the workshop for 1KA beginners, Dr Gregor Čehovin systematically presented the main functionalities of the tool. For the participants who are already familiar with the basic functionalities of 1KA, Miha Matjašič and Katja Zrim presented the more advanced functionalities and the main innovations in the last year of development of the 1KA tool. We also organised a seminar aimed at organisations interested in the possibilities of using the 1KA system online. Peter Hrvatin presented various possibilities of 1KA integration and development of additional customised solutions (e.g. customised reports, special modules).
